To emphasize this commitment, Pertamina held the HSSE Leadership Forum 2026, themed Managing Climate Risk in Oil & Gas Business: Strengthening Resilience and Sustainability Across the Value Chain, at the PGAS Auditorium.
At the forum, Environment Minister Mohammad Jumhur Hidayat emphasized that climate change not only presents challenges but also opens up new economic opportunities for Indonesia. He stated that Indonesia's rich tropical forests, oceans, and biodiversity are advantages that can be leveraged through the development of a carbon economy.
"The world is currently racing to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. However, these efforts cannot rely solely on government funding. It requires the involvement of the business sector through various schemes, including carbon trading," he said.
He cited the example of how rehabilitating one hectare of mangrove forest not only provides environmental benefits but can also generate economic value through the trading of carbon credits. Therefore, he encouraged national companies to take a greater role in developing the carbon market.
"Climate risk is actually a business. Indonesia has enormous potential, and I hope Indonesian companies will be key players in capitalizing on these opportunities," he said.
In addition to environmental aspects, Jumhur also highlighted the importance of implementing Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE) as a reflection of corporate culture. He believes that occupational health and safety are a form of respect for human beings that must be embedded in the culture of every organization.
Meanwhile, Pertamina Deputy President Director Oki Muraza stated that Pertamina continues to fulfill the government's mandate to strengthen national energy security, while accelerating various decarbonization initiatives across the company's business chain.
Next year, Pertamina is projected to drill more than 1,000 wells as part of its oil and gas production increase. Furthermore, Pertamina has also discovered new oil and gas reserves in South Sumatra.
With a workforce of approximately 130,000, occupational safety remains a top priority for the company. Pertamina continues to strengthen its HSSE culture through the use of personal protective equipment, the implementation of stop-work authority, increased asset integrity, and contractor development.
