Braskem signs partnership with the Dutch NXTLEVVEL Biochem for studies on the renewable solvent market

Petrochemical industry | 07 May 2021 IST | Polymerupdate.com
The solvent market is one of Braskem's main businesses and, in order to advance in this segment, the company entered into a partnership with the Dutch company NXTLEVVEL Biochem to carry out studies focusing on the commercialization of solutions produced from renewable raw material. The agreement started in January and is expected to be completed within nine months.

Headquartered in the Netherlands, NXTLEVVEL is a joint venture that combines the industrial knowledge of Towell Engineering Group with the cutting edge technology developed by GFBiochemicals. The company has its own technology and vast experience in high-performance solutions for sustainable chemistry, which, added to Braskem's commitment and dedication to the development of chemical products, will be the starting point to further expand the company's solvent portfolio in Latin America .

Fábio Barbosa, director of Braskem's Solvents business, explains that the partnership encompasses the commercialization of solutions for segments such as paints and coatings, agrochemicals, homecare and I&I cleaning ( industrial and institutional cleaning , in free translation ). "Our goal is to join forces to continue our strategy of diversification of raw materials and build a more sustainable world, in addition to increasing our market presence", he says.

"NXTLEVVEL and Braskem work together to identify markets for levulinic acid derivatives¹, boosting the power of our technology alongside Braskem's market leadership in solvents," says Aris de Rijke, CEO of NXTLEVVEL Biochem. "NXTLEVVEL's technology is very innovative and exclusive, making it possible, for the first time, to produce levulinic acid derivatives on an industrial scale. The main basis is the patented technology that uses levulinic acid, derived from biomass and its esters, for the production affordable solvents and other chemicals from renewable sources, "he concludes.

In addition to seeking to be the representative of NXTLEVVEL products in Latin America, Braskem remains committed to the development of its own renewable solvents. The solvent market in Latin America records sales of around 1.5 million tons per year, with approximately 55% (800 kton / year) of this volume sold in Brazil, where Braskem already holds a 25% market share.
