Petrobras has already carried out 20 thousand tests for Covid-19

Petrochemical industry | 02 Jun 2020 IST | Polymerupdate.com
Petrobras reached the mark of 20 thousand tests for the diagnosis of Covid-19 carried out throughout the country. The company, one of the first Brazilian companies to carry out this procedure on a large scale, advances in its strategy of extensive testing, along with other preventive measures, such as rigorous cleaning of the facilities, use of masks and reduction of face-to-face operations by about 90% in administrative areas and 50% in the operational areas that perform essential activities.

The proportion at Petrobras is 130 tests per group of one thousand people. The number includes employees of the company and also employees of companies that provide services at Petrobras' facilities, since the screening tests work as a barrier to contagion at the units. With this rate, the company has a higher testing rate than countries like Spain and the United States.

According to the general manager of Occupational Health, Marcos Marinho, the massive performance of tests contributes to the direction of preventive actions. “The monitoring of current cases allows us to observe that the measures are having an effect. In addition to improving the diagnosis, the tests form a preventive barrier, since we were able to identify asymptomatic people in the screening with Covid-19, preventing entry into our units and making it possible to improve the health care of these people, which is our priority ”, informs Marine.

Types of tests
Petrobras' testing strategy follows the recommendations of health authorities and regulatory bodies. The company applies the gold standard tests (RT-PCR) to all its own employees and professionals from contracted companies with symptoms of Covid-19, as well as people who have had regular contact with them (contacts). And it carries out rapid tests, which detect antibodies, to screen asymptomatic people before beginning activities in operational areas, such as platforms and refineries.

Laboratory services have already been contracted and tests are available at various collection points for employees throughout Brazil. The company has been purchasing more rapid test kits in order to, according to the capacity of the market, expand the scope and frequency of application of the tests in the operational units, always considering technical criteria and the evaluation of the region's health status.
