Close cooperation between STR Automotive and BASF Key to success

BASF and STR Automotive have for the first time brought components for premium vehicles to production maturity in a joint project with the new material Elastolit ® R 8819 Lightweight. Compared to conventional processing with PU-RRIM materials, the new process impresses with a high weight saving. The standard component thickness of 3.0 mm can be reduced to less than 2.5 mm without having negative effects on processing, quality or mechanical properties.

Weight savings with Elastolit ®

Small-series front and rear aprons are usually made of polyurethane short-fiber reinforced polyurethane (PU-RRIM) systems with a wall thickness of 3.0 mm. Attempts to reduce weight by reducing component thickness or by a special combination of fillers and concomitant lower material density failed due to inadequate mechanical properties such as stiffness, strength and toughness. Even with the climate change test, this procedure could not convince.

In the intensive exchange between BASF and STR Automotive, a technological solution was found for the problem, which is based on a high-modulus PU starting material with high temperature resistance and strength as well as very good toughness.

"The better performance of the matrix material allows the designer to make the component significantly thinner without having to put up with quality limitations," explains Jürgen Schneider, Technical Development at BASF Polyurethanes GmbH in Lemförde. Depending on the requirements and the application, Elastolit ® R 8819 Lightweight can be combined with various fillers: a standard mineral fiber for components such as rear aprons, a mineral / carbon fiber combination for vertical components with a low coefficient of thermal expansion (eg sidewall) or a combination of carbon fiber and carbon fiber lightweight hollow glass spheres for components in which a particularly high weight reduction is in the foreground.

Already in the first production parts, which were implemented with Elastolit ® R 8819 Lightweight, the weight could be reduced by 600 grams per m² surface. The Italian specialist for trim parts in the Automotive Exterior and Interior also sees potential for applications resulting from the higher temperature stability of the material. This allows additional areas of application for the material, for example in the engine compartment.
